SHIT WAIT
Why do so many of them wear greeeen?
Well I mean, I could tell you why it’s a combination at all. It’s really just simple color theory.
Using the RYB color wheel, red and green are complimentary (opposite on the wheel). A lot of these character have a complimentary or split-complimentary color palette.
Which, cool, ok, that’s fine, but why is it the same palette used so much???
I also don’t get why it seems the RYB wheel is used so much more still. The RYB wheel is for pigment, the RGB wheel is for light, and the CMY(K) wheel is used for printing.
So why, when most TVs use RGB (LIGHT) displays, would you still make so many character’s color palettes based on the pigment color wheel?? And why is one used so much more than the others????
This breaks it down a bit more toward the level I need
good tutorials are few and far between ( a lot of artists seem to get caught up in the superficial trappings of portraiture rather than the nitty gritty fundamentals), but these breakdowns by Bryan Lee are just fantastic. Super applicable tips and tricks, no matter your personal technique/approach.
Now I’m no expert on Neornithes, and I’m not going to bother listing what I voted for in every category (not that I can remember), however I would like to take just a moment of your time to recommend a very special parrot to you all:
Not only does it have jet black and blood red feathers, but it’s got a naked face (also black, of course) and a bill that’s so long and hooked it looks like a miniature vulture.*
You have to try to be this goddamn edgy of an animal. Especially when you’re a parrot.
And it doesn’t stop there, this thing is so freaking extra that it’s been designated an entire subfamilyfor its one singular genus with only one species.
If parrots wore trenchcoats, this is what it would be like.
Does the Pesquet’s parrot know no limit to the edge?
Yes, yes it does.
Despite appearances, this parrot is a specialised fruit-eater, particularly fond of figs, along with flowers and nectar. See? It was sweet on the inside all along!
You know that trope where the dark, brooding gothic character is paired up with the bright, upeat, peppy (usually blonde) character? This is it except it’s parrots.
To round off with some general information, it’s relatively large for a parrot with a length of ~46 cm (whatever that means)—despite several attempts, I could not come up with any results for its wingspan, go figure. The species is only known from the hill and montane rainforests of New Guinea, and in part to its rarity, an in part to its sick feathers, it is overhunted and currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.
I’m running out of edgy-jokes and fun facts about it, so I’ll finish here and say to totally go and vote for Shadow the Parrot as this year’s parrot for DMM2017.
((*Pesquet’s parrots also sometimes go by the name “Vulturine parrot”, however there’s already another species of parrot called this.
This species gets its name because while they start off like your typical small, green parrot as juveniles, they shed all the feathers on their head as adults, leaving them with a naked, black head.
If you’re an artist who likes to work really close, (like me), do yourself a favor and put up two views. You can do this by clicking View–> New on your toolbar.
There’s nothing worse than finally zooming out and realizing what you were doing was very wrong. This saved me a lot of grief tbh. I’m sure everyone knows this already but ._.;; I arrived quite late to that party.
WHAT
That’s amazing..
Does this work for Photoshop?
For Photoshop you’ll wanna go to Window > Arrange > New Window for [Document].
BRINGING THIS BACK BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HELPFUL THIS HAS BEEN. This will save you hours and hours of backtracking (fixing a thing close up, zooming back out and realizing that the thing you fixed doesn’t work with the rest of the picture–rinse and repeat). As someone who uses the ‘squint and see if it looks right’ method of drawing anatomy, the tiny window is a goddamned life saver.
a six year old idea that i’m still apparently into: au where it was the water tribe who attacked, katara and sokka still found aang in the iceberg 100 years later, but then, kind of tried to kill him. luckily aang escaped in time to team up with a pair of plucky young fire nation siblings who ought to have inherited the throne, you know, if the water tribe hadn’t laid waste to their country. mostly, i just like drawing katara in military gear, and enjoy thinking about the political intrigue of two ruling branches of the water tribe.
If you’re nonbinary and your identity sometimes/partially aligns with your “assigned gender” and you’re worried it makes you less valid, don’t worry!! You are still nonbinary and your gender should absolutely be respected!
I often world build on my free time (if I have the inspiration) and sometimes like to play around with my elves. A lot of the characters in my mind have no proper design yet, but I’m slowly remedying that. Nénuro and Asegedeche need some more fleshing out, and Aqila and Iodas didn’t have anything before this so I’m hoping to do more of them too…
Anyway! Saffran’s parents, Asegedeche, Nénuro and Aqila+ teacher crush, Iodas
